Went out last night on Thanksgiving at 8:15 p.m. (yes, note the time!) to get a cake for the table and came back with a new purse!
Cadaquez, one hour and fourty-five minutes north of Barcelona on the Costa Brava. Home and escape for both Dali and Picasso.
Getting to know the post office, figuring out the phones, tracking down the school bus, learning to use the metro, throwing away things that look good, but we can’t eat. Time for an escape. Buying appliances, buying furniture, buying everything we forgot. Escape, break, dodge, duck, evade, flee, fly, retreat, skip, slip, shun, vanish. A Sunday outing in Cadaques.
Barcelona tastes like tuna. Tuna on green salad, tuna in mixed salad, tuna in russian salad, tuna in lentils, tuna croquettes, tuna on toast, tuna on veal, tuna over greens, tuna sandwiches, tuna empanadas, tuna for breakfast, tuna for lunch, tuna for tapas, tuna for dinner. Tuna packed in oil, tuna packed in virgin olive oil, tuna packed in paprika oil, tuna packed in white flavored oil, tuna in water, tuna in salt, tuna in a can, tuna in a jar, Tuna, tuna, tuna. Sample, savor, sense. Whole walls of tune. But...I don’t get it....tuna with chocolate cream cookies?
A self-locking intracity bike borrowing system that tells you where and how many bikes are available near you. Open to all residents.
Public bikes, almost free, everywhere, pick one up, drop one off, never ride the same one twice. Democracy. Go to the beach, go to the mall, go to the school, go to work. Real bike paths. Democracy, equality, fairness, freedom, likeness, parity tolerance. It’s called Bicing. www.bicing.cat
Landed today in Barcelona, Spain. I’ll be here for the next two years and this is my record of what I notice, what calls out, what hides, what you might not guess or know. What becomes my day, my routine, my life. Enjoy
Cooking with one kitchen knife, a line of suitcases at the door, speaking like a two year old, happy to be here. A tourist. Seeing what is charming, quaint, editing out strange sewer smells and thin walls. Tourist, drifter, explorer, gadabout, nomad, pilgrim, rambler, roamer, rover, stranger, voyager, wayfarer. The streets of my neighborhood -- Sarria.
